    Farhan Thawar is a VP of Engineering at Shopify via the acquisition of Helpful.com where he was co-founder and CTO. Previously he was the CTO, Mobile at Pivotal and VP, Engineering at Pivotal Labs via the acquisition of Xtreme Labs. Farhan is an avid investor and advisor to startups in Toronto and San Francisco, including being a mentor at yCombinator and First Round Capital. Previously, Farhan held senior technical positions at Achievers, Microsoft, and Trilogy.

High Performance Headless Storefronts With Hydrogen

Hydrogen has been built to power headless storefronts that are both performant and dynamic, traditionally competing priorities. In this talk, we'll dig into the recent advances in web technologies that allow Hydrogen to achieve incredible performance scores. Through the power of streaming, React Server Components and edge-rendering, Hydrogen enables custom storefront developers to build fast and dynamic ecommerce experiences.

Creating Custom Shopify Checkout Experiences with Checkout UI Extensions
Workshop 1

For the first time, developers can create Checkout customizations. This workshop will cover the core concepts behind building with Checkout UI extensions, including; generating extensions with the Shopify CLI, choosing extension points, using the Checkout UI component library, persisting data to metafields, and controlling navigation. To get the most out of this workshop participants should have experience with GraphQL, Node.js and React.

ShopifyQL: A Data Querying Language Built for Commerce
Workshop 2

Deliver analytical experiences and insights for your clients with minimal effort. ShopifyQL lets you directly and accurately query the data within a Shopify store so you can deliver business insights without needing to transform the data. In this workshop, we'll explore the ShopifyQL language and use the starter app template from the Shopify CLI to create a custom visualization using the ShopifyQL API.

Looking for actionable ideas on how to improve your apps? Our App Design Guidelines (ADGs) give you well-defined principles that you can use to make your app stand out. In this talk, we'll go over why we created them, what they are, and show examples to help you better understand the ADGs and why to follow them.

Render, Notify and Automate with Shopify Metafields
Workshop 1

While metafields are easy to understand, creating a metafield strategy and taking the time to deploy it effectively can take time. As a Shopify partner, you can help guide a metafield strategy and/or put it into action. In this workshop, we'll go through some more advanced metafield implementations and explore new and creative use cases where they can be used. Among the exercises we'll be querying external databases to identify upsell opportunities and setting up automations using metafields in Flow.

Effective Ways to Improve Your Online Store Performance
Workshop 2

When it comes to storefront performance, you no longer need to settle for “acceptable”. Leveraging modern browser technologies and recent Shopify features, it's possible to have an Online Store and have it perform well too! In this workshop, we will dig into some theme code, identify areas for improvement, and then develop the code to improve the store's speed score and the user experience.

There are millions of merchants on Shopify and they all need different apps to solve different problems. As a developer, it can be hard to know what merchants are looking for. In this talk, we'll cover specific opportunities and share insights into examples of global and regional needs in North America for which app developers can build upon.

Track 2: Guided Workshops (60 min.)

Create a Volume Based Discount in Rust with Shopify Functions
Workshop 1

Shopify Functions unlocks the ability for developers to customize Shopify's business logic. This workshop will cover how to create a new discount based on Functions using Rust, and how to deploy and test the function on a development store. After this workshop, you'll have built a Shopify Function that automatically applies volume discounts at checkout that you can then use as a basis for your own app.

The Evergreen Brick Works site has long been at the center of creating the building blocks for commerce. In 1889, it began as the Don Valley Pressed Brick Company and provided quality building materials for many of Ontario's most high-profile buildings, including the Ontario Legislative Building. In 2010, it was reopened as an event center that also boasts parks, public art, a weekly farmers market, and more.
